A set of people, appointed by the government, focusing on online piracy has stated that the cause for individuals unlawfully downloading material that is copyrighted is due to the lack of knowledge of lawful alternates.

This Consumer Focus group was funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, run by Peter Mandelson. It surveyed two thousand people and their findings, released a week ago before showed that out of 2000 people, only sixty percent knew of lawful distribution sites like Amazon and iTunes. Thus, their conclusion is that piracy is a direct result of the lack of lawful distribution and promotion services by the music industry.

The International Director of Consumer Focus, Jill Johnstone, stated that the music business is harming to itself by not giving promoting lawful online music distribution. In her opinion, if file sharing is as damaging to the music industry as they claim, then the music industry should focus on aggressively promoting legal alternatives. She said that only after trying this active promotion should legal recourse be resorted to.

Consumer Focus is also suggesting a broader spectrum of commercial models in the legal digital download services and a change in the UK’s copyright and license laws to make it easier for the music business to provide lawful options. This may be a welcome move for the people fighting for consumer rights as a better option to banning repeated violators but it has to be noted that the claim that piracy occurs due to a lack of lawful options is a little doubtful.

CD and DVD Replication

Cd and DVD Replication is primarily a mechanical way of producing the disc. When you buy software, music or films from a shop this is the process they will have been produced. This method is best used for runs over a 1000 pieces and can run in to the millions.

The Process- First off the data is burnt by a laser onto a glass plate that is coated with a photosensitive material, you will often hear the phrase ‘glass master’ this is the first stage in the process. Once the glass master is finished a metal stamper is developed via electrolysis from the plate, it physically has a track with pits in that eventually the laser in the player will read when the disc is finished.

Once the stamper is made the glass plate is recycled for use in the making of different stampers. The stamper is then deposited into an injection moulding machine and the image is physically pressed into molten optical grade polycarbonate disc under a pressure of circa 30 tons. You could associate this to the way vinyl records are made but on a smaller disc. The disc then is taken out of the mould and allowed to cool in a controlled environment so that it will not deform. If you were to look at the disc now you would see a clear piece of plastic and you would just be able to make out the data that had been pressed into it. This is so delicate that if you were to rub your finger across the disc it would be entirely destroyed. The next stage is to construct a reflective layer that the laser in the player can use, this process is spluttering. The disc enters a vacuum chamber that has an aluminum plate at the top and a magnet at the bottom, a puff of argon gas is disbursed and an electrical charge is applied this transforms the surface of the aluminum to atomize and a plasma is formed. This is then drawn down onto the disc buy the magnet. The disc exits the chamber and is coated with a UV varnish to protect the disc and stopping the aluminum from oxidizing. The disc is then ready to be printed and packaged. The lead-time in producing a disc this way is normally 10 to 12 working days.

NARIP:

To qualify to become a member of NARIP, you must be a professional in the record industry. “I realized that, beyond organizations like the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) which is a lobbying body that focuses on legislation, there wasn’t an organization that served the needs of those whose careers are completely in the record industry,” Taylor stated.

The Beginnings.

“The idea for the Los Angeles Music Network goes back to my first job in the business, with Avalon Attractions, a big concert promoter in Southern California,” says Taylor. “Every spoke of the music industry wheel comes together to make a concert happen. Here I was, fresh out of college, and I had access to just about every possible type of professional - from radio to press to record company personnel, from artist managers to the artists themselves.”

Taylor looked around for an association through which she could meet the people she interacted with on the phone. “I was very surprised not to find anything of real value, so I started putting together little meet-and-greets among the people I was dealing with,” she says. “At first, there were only about three or four of us, but it grew. That was the seed that led to my building the professional relationships I have today, not to mention the Job Bank and my mailing list. It’s the best in the business.”

Some of what LAMN and NARIP do overlaps, and Taylor regularly employs NARIP members for LAMN panels and other functions, and to mentor LAMN members. However, she is keen to provide the right kind of experiences for each group.

For NARIP members, her approach is to take on a continuing-education role. “We should never stop learning and, no matter how much experience we may have, there’s always something else or another point of view that we can absorb and appreciate,” Taylor says.

Pianist-turned-executive:

Piano chord charts are used to help you keep track of chord changes. And the cool thing about them is that you can use them for improvisation and composition. Here’s how.

Let’s say you have an 8-bar phrase to play. There are no chord symbols yet so you don’t know what chords you’ll be playing. You just have 8-bars in front of you. The first thing you need to know is the time signature. For our purposes here, we’ll keep it simple and use 3/4 or 4/4 time.

Now let’s select 4/4 time for our 8-bar phrase. Now we know the meter but what about the chords? Here’s where we can jot down chord progressions for either improvisation or composition. For example, you may want to begin something in the Key of F Major. Having made that decision, you know that you have 6 chords to use right away. These are F Major, G minor, A minor. B flat Major, C 7, and D minor.

All that’s left to do now is begin your piece in the Key of F Major. We usually start with the F Major chord itself so you now know that your first bar or 2 will be the F Major chord. But now a problem arises - how do you fill up the rest of the space? By using an 8-bar phrase to begin with, you don’t have to worry about filling up a lot of space and taking forever to complete a section of music.

For instance, let’s suppose we want to chart out an 8-bar phrase for improvisation purposes. We know what chords we will be working with. Now it’s just a matter of fooling around on the piano and playing with the chord choices. You may want to place a chord change at every 2-measures. You can even use 2 chords for the entire 8-bar phrase such as F Major and B flat Major.

The whole point of the piano chord charts is to have a tool that will help you navigate what chords to play and when to change chords.
