Flashlight and Other Lighting Bulbs Defined Part I

Auto Date Monday, July 14th, 2008

I was recently doing some research on different lighting features and what I found is that there are many people that are confused about the different bulbs available. Words like Halogen, Krypton, Xenon, LED, and Incandescent can confuse you if you really do not know what they mean. This article is Part I of a simple guide to help diffuse some of this confusion and help you determine the best lighting for your needs.

Let’s talk about your common incandescent light bulb. How does this type of bulb work? The bulb is constructed of tungsten filament. When electricity flows through the filament, the filament heats up and causes it to light up. You may be saying, “Well that seems pretty easy.” Ah, but there is a little bit of a catch here. You will find when you go shopping that there are different types of incandescent light bulbs: the standard bulb and the halogen bulb.

Standard incandescent light bulbs are the most popular and the ones most people have in their homes. The bulb is constructed of a tungsten filament. Light is produced by heating the filament until it glows.

The advantages of a standard incandescent bulb are that they are cheaper and easy to find. The disadvantages are tungsten is deposited on the walls of the bulb reducing light output, bulbs do not last due to the short time it takes for the filament to get thinner and break, and more energy is needed to produce light which affects battery life.

The halogen incandescent light bulb is constructed in the same fashion as the standard bulb. The difference is the gases found inside the light bulb. A halogen bulb is constructed of a mixture of halogen gas and an inert gas.

How does halogen gas make a difference in the light bulb? The answer is tungsten recycling. This is where it could start to get very technical but I am going to keep it simple. Basically, the gases found in a halogen light bulb create an environment where the burned tungsten can be re-deposited back on the filament. This recycling process produces a bulb that will last 2 to 3 times longer because the filament does not burn out as quickly. The average life of a halogen bulb is approximately 2,000 - 4,000 hours.

Now, I need to address the inert gases found in halogen bulbs because they too make a difference in your bulb. A halogen bulb can either have argon, krypton, or xenon gas as an inert gas. Depending on which gas is used will determine the efficiency of the bulb. Argon is the cheapest and least efficient because it produces more heat. Krypton is in the middle as far as price and efficiency. Krypton is more expensive and efficient than argon but not as expensive or efficient as xenon. Xenon is the most expensive and efficient but will produce the whitest light with the least amount of heat.

Which type of bulb you decide to buy would depend on many things such as what the bulb will be used for, how much light is needed, or how long you will be using the bulb. I hope this Part I of my light bulb series helped to clear up some of the confusion out there.

Part II will address LED lighting.

This season Anthony Loeff the European mountaineer is reporting the scales for Chomolungma

Auto Date Sunday, June 15th, 2008

The 75-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. More than 3201 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

His first found him within 239 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Three years later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Mt Everest to finish what he had started.

Sherchan just 7 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma or Mount Everest. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. This year European alpinist Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for the Mount Everest after he reached the top of Kilimanjaro earlier this season.

However, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused “Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Mt Everest is shared by two countries. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side.

Low Pressure vs. High Pressure Paintball Tanks

Auto Date Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Should I get a high pressure or low pressure N2 or HPA tank for
my paintball gun?

That’s a good question. Let’s get a few things straight first.
The terms “nitrogen tank” and “high pressure air” (HPA) tank
mean the same thing. Fields and stores use compressed air to
fill the tanks because air is more easily accessible. In the
past, nitrogen was more readily available to fields than more
expensive compressors. Today if you walk into a store and ask
for a nitro tank or a nitro fill they will know what you mean.

Second, “high pressure” or “low pressure” refers to the actual
output pressure of the regulator on your tank. The regulator
controls the pressure that your tank will use in your gun. High
pressure tanks usually output 800 to 850 PSI. Low Pressure tanks
usually output 450 PSI. Preset tanks have a fixed output
pressure from the factory which cannot be adjusted. Both HP and
LP tanks have preset outputs. Adjustable tanks like the
Nitroduck X-stream or the Empire Adjustable don’t have a fixed
output pressure and can be adjusted by the player to any output
pressure they need. This article will focus on preset tanks
because you can use adjustable tanks for any gun.

Now is HP or LP right for your gun? There are a few things to
keep in mind when considering this. First, what pressure does
your gun need to cycle and shoot a paintball? (This is called
the operating pressure.) Tippmanns, Spyders and other entry
level guns need 800 PSI or higher to operate, so you would need
an HP tank with these guns to generate enough pressure to allow
the gun to operate. So if you have a gun that needs 800 PSI to
work and you hook up a 400 PSI LP tank to it, you are not
putting in enough pressure to allow the gun to work. This is why
you would need a high pressure tank.

Mid- to higher-end guns typically operate with less than 300 PSI
input pressure and come with a high pressure regulator. High
pressure regulators go inline (in between) the tank and the gun.
These regulators can accept an input pressure of up too 850 PSI
and regulate it down to a user-adjustable setting to meet the
markers’ LP needs. LP guns can use LP tanks. Using an LP Tank
with an LP gun will result in better shot consistency over the
chrono because you are not putting as much stress on the inline
high pressure regulator. Having an LP tank with an LP gun will
also prevent or minimize hot shots if your inline regulator
fails. It will minimize the high pressure air spike going into
the gun which will typically cause your velocity to spike up as
well.

So in short, if you have an HP gun or an LP gun with an HP
regulator, you can use an HP tank. LP guns can also use an LP
tank. Some guns, like the Angel Speed 05, come with a built-in,
inline LP regulator so they can only use LP tanks. As technology
advances we are seeing more and more entry level guns becoming
LP, so it’s always best to check with the manufacturer of your
marker for their tank recommendations. And never buy a new tank
before you buy a new gun.

Tips for Archery Fishing

Auto Date Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Also known as Bow fishing, this is a sport wherein a fisherman
uses archery equipment to fish.

A regular hunting bow can be used for fishing by simply
attaching a reel to the front of the bow grip.

Archery fishing is especially favored by regular hunters when
regular game like deer are off season. This way they can
continuously hone their skills for whatever season it may be.

Before engaging in archery fishing, one must first take into
consideration the following:

1. A fisherman must be duly licensed. Some states require that
an individual have a state license to fish.

2. Equipment. Most states have a predetermined set of approved
equipment for archery fishing.

3. Archery Safety Course. Still, some states require that an
individual go through an approved safety course for archery
fishing to ensure that the individual is well versed with the
proper safety precautions and information regarding applicable
laws in fishing.

4. Seasons. Bow fishing in some states can only be done in
certain seasons. This is to allow the fish to spawn.

5. Species of fish. Some states have rules forbidding archery
fishing for some species of fish.

The following skills are necessary for an individual to obtain
and practice:

Knot tying. Though it may seem like a simple task, tying knots
that will not slip (line for the arrow) are crucial in bow
fishing.

Tuning. Tuning is making sure that the bow is at its best
working condition. To ensure this, one has to continuously
adjust the rest and calibrate the nock.

For a faster tuning process, one may shoot a regular bow-fishing
arrow (without the tip) onto a target made of cardboard.

Marksmanship or targeting. Bow fishing and bow hunting, though
similar on some aspects, really do differ on many things. Arrows
for bow fishing are heavier, have larger arrow tips and, the
most obvious one, has a string attached to the arrow.

And since fish are shot in the water, resistance differs as when
compared to shooting in the air (for bow hunting of games)

There are various methods or ways of archery fishing. This
includes the following:

1. Still hunting. A fisherman selects a place by the lake in
which he would wait for passing fish to shoot its bow at.

2. Stalking. This can be done on foot or while on a boat. One is
in constant motion in an attempt to locate fish.

3. Ambush. Fish that are best ambushed are the ones that are
spawning since they tend to crowd thus increasing chances of
target.

Lightweight Backpacks - How Light?

Auto Date Monday, May 12th, 2008

How light is light? Lightweight backpacks weigh less than three pounds, a standard I just invented. There are good packs under three pounds for almost all types of trips. My own Golite backpack weighs just 14 ounces, and has a capacity of 2900 cubic inches, plus 1000 more in the extension collar. It’s more comfortable than any frame pack I’ve used, but then I don’t carry more than 20 pounds in it.

The mesh outer pockets are a great idea. I stuff my wet tarp in the large one in the morning, where it’s easy to take out to dry later. I’ve had my GoLite for ten years. I’ve used it from the rain forest to glaciers at 20,600 feet on two trips to Ecuador, as well as in the Rockies, the Smokies, and in Michigan. Packed right, it qualifies as carry-on when I fly (I don’t like to check luggage).

My next pack will probably be the tougher GoLite Gust, which weighs 20 ounces. I just read seven reviews, all of them praising the pack. One reviewer used it for the weekend with a 27-pound load, so a lightweight backpack doesn’t have to be light-duty.

Using Frameless Lightweight Backpacks

Like mine, many lightweight backpacks don’t have frames. I use a sleeping pad for a frame, as is recommended. Some backpackers just put the pad in the backpack loosely rolled, with everything inside it. I’ve found a better way.

Take a closed-cell pad, like the cheap blue ones, and cut it across, halfway through the foam, on opposite sides. You can accordion it into a three layer thick (2 cuts) or four layer thick (3 cuts) back-padding frame. The “hinges” thus created last a long time. Put the pad in the pack, (against your back) and load everything in behind it.

Other Backpack Options

If you want lightweight AND cheap backpacks, start experimenting. I’ve used an old aluminum pack frame and large duffle bag, to create a full-suspension pack that weighs just two pounds. Though it carried loads well in the mountains of Montana, it wasn’t the most convenient to use. By the way, it is lighter than any frame pack I’ve ever seen advertised. The 8-ounce duffle works okay as a backpack by itself too.

I recently bought a lightweight backpack at Walmart. It weighs six ounces, and it is actually comfortable. It’s a daypack, but large enough for overnight hikes, since I travel really light. It cost just four dollars. Lighweight backpacking gear isn’t always expensive.

Floyd Patterson Loses Battle With Prostate Cancer

Auto Date Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The Boxing world has lost one of its most adored and appealing heavyweights. Former Heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson, who was considered a very humble and kind person recently succumbed to the battle against Alzheimer’s and prostate disease. This was a drawn out bout that just seemed to outlast the 71-year-old legend in the final round. In 1956, Floyd Patterson knocked out Archie Moore to become world heavyweight champion of the world. Back and forth between fights he lost and won the title. In the end of his career it was the great Sonny Liston that finalized Patterson trip back and forth to stardom.

At a memorial service for Patterson held in Hudson Valley on Saturday, more than 200 people got together to say goodbye to this great man. After retiring to New Paltz in 1972, Patterson made it a point to seek and heal lost souls, by becoming an ecumenical minister. The rev at the service, which knew Patterson quite well, could not understand how such a caring and loving man could actually beat other people up for sport. Nonetheless he does recall seeing pictures of Patterson helping the men he floored up after a bout.

Patterson was later inducted into the International hall of fame for Boxing in the year 1991. Patterson did have an adopted son by the name of Tracy Harris Patterson, whom carried in his footsteps by winning the super bantamweight and super featherweight titles.
