Internet Impacts the Way Young People Think

Auto Date Monday, March 1st, 2010

Accessing the internet has led to a revolutionary change in the way the youth are now comprehending problems and finding solutions, according to a recent study.

A recent research conducted on a group of 12 to 18 year old students revealed that younger internet users have shorter attention spans and they tend to flip through websites more often than older users when carrying out research. To analyse this behaviour pattern the youth were given a series of questions and websites for reference. While the older participants in the study repeatedly used websites before moving on to new ones, the younger group accessed different websites. 40 percent of the younger participants used just 3 or less web pages to source material for their answers while the older users used double the number of sites to find the answers.

The growing dependence on internet for various requirements has left younger users unable to focus their attention on a single task for a long duration, the study concluded. Internet has encouraged ‘associative thinking’- which has led to lessened focus among young internet users. This was concluded from the fact that the younger group was unable to use a single text for information.

Experts at the London University College explain how the internet has a negative impact on our youth. Professor David Nicholas stated that the internet is influencing the way the younger generation thinks and reacts and considering the results of the research it is not a positive change.

This information gathered through the study will be revealed on the BBC2’s documentary on Virtual Revolution.

BT Embarks on Ambitious Project to Improve Broadband Speeds

Auto Date Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

BT has decided to expand the reach of the fastest internet that it has planned to provide to homes and businesses across the UK. It had previously planned to provide broadband of 100Mb speeds to one million houses by the end of 2012 - with the possibility for final upgrade to 1Gb in case there is a demand for fast internet. It had also planned to provide internet of 40Mb speed to more than nine million houses.

However, the recent announcement by BT suggests that it has decided to extend these services to a larger number of customers and now it aims to bring the fast fibre optic broadband service to 2.5 million homes by 2012 instead of one million. This announcement has been influenced by a study by Cisco that stated that among 66 countries, the UK stands 31 in terms of speed.

Currently, BT provides internet of 24Mb speed via copper wire network. The proposed increase in speed will cost it £1.5 billion.

CEO of Openreach Steve Robertson said that BT is totally committed to providing fast internet to users. He added that the UK is already leading in terms of broadband availability to its citizens and that it is time now to improve the speeds as well. He further said that BT is also responding to the demands of the service providers who have been asking for expansion of FTTP technology for a long time.

For information on your ISP and corresponding broadband speed, try using the broadband check from Broadband Genie to get a snapshot of your current download and upload speeds. It’s a good site to compare BT Broadband prices and service with Virgin Broadband deals and the other top internet service providers such as O2 Broadband.

Merger of Two Major Players to See Birth of the UK’s Largest Mobile Provider

Auto Date Monday, September 21st, 2009

Orange UK and T-Mobile are set to combine and form a single entity that will be the largest mobile provider in the UK and is thus expected to cause a stir in the mobile broadband market. The two brands will remain separate for another year and a half and then by 2012 one of the brands will cease to exist resulting in a single brand, which will boast of a customer base of around 28.4 million.

After the merger, a large number of phone masts will no longer be required. Thus, around 5,000 phone masts will be taken down. Secondly, a considerable number of employees will be fired. The combined workforce of the companies is around 19,000, and a section of these will surely lose their jobs after the merger.

As for the effects on customers, T-Mobile is of the view that customers will enjoy excellent services, unmatched 2G and 3G network coverage, and a larger store network. The merged entity will be able to exploit the option of new technologies and new services better. It will thus emerge as a leader in the mobile broadband market in the UK.

On the other hand, the view of Orange Broadband in this respect is quite neutral. One of its spokesperson said that as for the near future, the merger would not have much effect on its customers. According to the mutual agreement, the joint venture will take actual shape only during the first half of 2010. Until that time, business for Orange UK will continue on its routine course.

Camping Sites No Longer Connectivity Dark Spots

Auto Date Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

An estimated 50,000 tourists will go on a camping holiday across the UK over the August holiday period. If you are also going for a camping and caravanning holiday then you have another reason to cheer. You can now enjoy internet connectivity at your camp site if it is one of the 77 sites selected by BT Openzone - so happy campers with dongles at the ready.

The notion of a camping holiday until some time back was setting up a tent at the camp site with a single public phone being the only connectivity option with the rest of the world. But the internet service provider, BT, will now provide free internet access through WiFi to those who go for camping and caravanning. The company has identified 77 main leisure and holiday parks across the country for this purpose. With the availability of WiFi access at the camp site, the campers can remain connected with the world through internet from their tents instead of the traditional phone box at the camp site.

The camper only requires carrying a WiFi enabled device to enjoy this service. This service is open to BT OpenZone users and also to the subscribers of mobile broadband and O2 iPhone who are eligible to WiFi minutes as per their contract. Others can purchase BT OpenZone vouchers online before going for the trip and utilise the service.

General manger of BT OpenZone, Chris Bruce, said that the option of remaining connected will provide additional means of entertainment like online games in case rough weather forces you to stay confined to the tents. It can also be used to search for local tourist information and making cheap internet calls.

Auto Date Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Orange is relaunching their fixed broadband service again to new contract customers. If new customers sign a contract for a minimum of £30 a month, they receive the basic fixed-line home broadband for free. Orange plans to use this as a marketing strategy to increase sales. Orange is also expected to increase the package value, by offering an increase in the allowable downloads.

Tom Alexander, Chief Executive for Orange UK, stated that the new service brings customers a significant improvement in the quality of service. They had stopped marketing the service last year, and focused their attention on improving the basic components. The customers are already expressing their satisfaction, and it is evident that the fixed line service is better than it has ever been in the longest time.

As new customer offers are launched, considerable progress is anticipated. The fixed line broadband now offers better stability, less service problems, and an improved speed. Customer satisfaction scores are also soaring, compared to what they were in the past 12 months. With such major improvements in the quality of the service, Orange is now ready to begin remarketing of the service, and they are confident that the results will be very successful.

Cell phones are now such a basic need that many consumers do not bother to shop around, even though they are losing money. They can simply find a mobile phone in a high street store, or by mail order from a magazine at a pretty fair price that it hardly seems worth making the additional effort looking for the best deals. The information these people have missed is that most of the competitively priced deals are offered over the Internet, where big discounts are achievable without even leaving the room. Through the use of a mobile phone comparison site is not only the simplest but is also the most cost competitive way to purchase a mobile phone.
