How the Internet Has Given Public Relations a Shot in the Arm

Perhaps the biggest change in how companies function these days is in public relations. Whereas previously, a firm would advertise in printed media like magazines, newspapers, and industry journals, today we have the internet. This has hugely influenced how companies conduct public relations. With the introduction of blogging, suddenly we’re getting friendly updates straight from CEOs instead of the normal finespun, orthodox editorials usually located in their monthly publication. Not only that, but we’re hearing more from firms too, as websites are constantly updated. With the recent advent of sites like Twitter, business organizations are also microblogging too.

Also the net has made things much less passive and a lot more proactive. Now those surfing the internet actively vote for your advert by clicking it, or sign up to your emailing list, or enquire directly to you using your website contact forms. With this activity, we know far more about target markets due to their “footprint” they make with their actions. Consequently it’s vital that an organization can respond to the opinions left by their visitors and form their messages accordingly.

With such dramatic changes, does it mean companies have much greater opportunity to command how the general public perceives them? Yes it does. Corporations are now spending more and more time on PR, as a lot more new “public meeting places” have become available with technological advances. With that increased opportunity however, there is the elevated chance to make errors too, and so we are of the opinion that it is better to use a PR company to start with. There is much to learn from them. For instance, how do they use all the new media that is now available? They have gathered experience in knowing what is successful, and what isn’t successful. They can quickly identify your weaknesses and bolster your strong points in terms of putting your message across. A good location to start in terms of finding a PR company is Google. Just type a key phrase like public relations uk and you’ll see a list of public relations companies ready to assist your company’s requirements.
