Our new flats are located in a strategic part of the town, in a very central part of Venice, steps away from the famous Rialto Bridge, directly north of St. Marco Square, but away from the confusion, in a very quite part of Castello quarter. The apartments are part of a XVIII century raised ground floor property. This allows very easy access (there are only two steps) while ensuring that the accommodation is dry and confortable all year round. Both apartments were fully renovated in 2004.
Main Appartment
It has been completely restored in 2004, with suspended wooden floors to mantain a dry, confortable enviroment throughout the year. It also feature built-in air conditioning and de-humidifying.
It perfectly suits two couples or a family, but it could be suitable for a group of friends up to 9 people.
The main door to the apartment opens into an area containing two single beds. The are also doors to the luonge/dining room, two bedrooms and the bathroom
The lounge/dining room looks out onto the shared garden and includes a full modern kitchen with vented 4-ring cooker, including an oven and grill, a fridge-freezer, toaster, kettle and iron (a vacuum cleaner is stored in the twin bedroom). There is also a TV with DVD player and this room includes sleeping capacity for up to 3 people in the form of a double sofa bed and a single ‘bergere’, a full-sized single bed that also serves as a divan.
Of the two bedrooms one is a double and the other can be configured either as a double or twin room. Both offer spacious, modern wardrobes.
Studio apartment
The Santa Giustina Studio Apartment at Ramo delle Moschette is ideal for a couple but could accommodate up to 5 people.
It is particularly suitable for singles or couples requiring reasonably-priced accommodation for longer lets.
The front door of the studio leads into the main lounge/bedroom. This is equipped with a one-piece pull-down double bed which, if folded away against the wall, reveals a 2-seater sofa for use during the day (although most of our customers are happy to leave the bed permanently down). In addition, there is a combined wardrobe and TV unit with a television and DVD. This room also contains an additional single pull-out bed.
The main room leads through a small hallway to the kitchen. The hallway also contains a door to the bathroom.
The kitchen is equipped with a vented 4-ring stainless steel cooker including an oven and grill, fridge-freezer, toaster, kettle and iron (a vacuum cleaner is stored in the main room). There is also a dining table (there are 5 dining chairs in the apartment).

Recently, trans fats have risen to the forefront of the nutrition world. It is not uncommon on a regular visit to the grocery store to see a wide range of products advertising themselves as being “trans fat free”. This is helpful information for the regular consumer to help avoid over consumption of trans fats, but what are trans fats, why are they harmful and how does one identify trans fats “hidden” in non-labeled foods? This article aims to help the average consumer understand more about trans fats and identify sources from everyday consumables.

What are trans fats and why are they bad?

The technical term for fats is fatty acids. Fatty acids are one of three varieties: unsaturated (most vegetable oils), polyunsaturated (soft margarines, essential fatty acids like omega 3 and omega 6 from fish and nuts) or fully saturated (coconut oil, lard, hard margarines). The term “saturated” refers to the type of chemical bonds (single or double) between the carbon and hydrogen atoms. Most fatty acids in their natural state are in their “cis form” that is, all the hydrogen atoms bonded to the individual carbons atoms are on one side of the fatty acid molecule - on the “cis” side.

Unsaturated oils are not as useful to be made into finished food products since they are prone to “oxidation” and can go rancid - destroying the taste and texture of the product. So to avoid this spontaneous oxidation, the industry practice is to “hydrogenate” the oil. This then creates what is known as a “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” (polyunsaturated fatty acid) that is more stable and less likely to become rancid. Hydrogenation may help increase the quality of the finished food product, however it often involves the formation of trans fats - where the hydrogen is bonded to the carbon on the opposite side of the fatty acid molecule (”trans” side). A trans fatty acid has a different structure than a regular cis fatty acid.

Studies have shown a strong connection between trans fat consumption and the development of cardiovascular disease like arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and heart disease. Evidence also seems to indicate that trans fats may be even more harmful than regular saturated fats like coconut oil, animal fats and lard. Therefore it is very important to be able to avoid consuming high concentrations of trans fats.

How To Spot “Hidden” Trans Fats

A good rule of thumb is to read the ingredients list on the side of the product packaging and look for the words “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil”. Any product containing this ingredient has a higher probability of containing trans fats. It is surprising the number of products that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and the consumer must be vigilant to avoid consuming too many of these foods. Examples of products are: almost all baked goods, foods with breading (chicken breasts, snacks ect.), fried foods, margarines/spreads and even cereals (even “low fat” granola).

In conclusion, it is hoped that this short article provided some basic knowledge on the importance of avoiding trans fats. An informed consumer will be able to make sensible and healthy choices and avoid potentially harmful nutrition sources.

Increasing the fiber in your diet has been shown to: reduce your
cholesterol, reduce your hunger, lower your fat absorption, reduce surges in insulin levels, help with weight loss, lower the risk of colon cancer, and lower your risk of heart disease. WOW! Sounds like a miracle cure - where can I get this stuff? The answer: At your grocery store.

Old Ben Franklin, citing in Poor Richard’s Almanac 250 years ago stated “An
apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well he was right. Not only because the
apple contains vitamins and minerals, but also because it is a major source
of fiber. Maybe three apples a day keeps three doctors away!

What is fiber? Well, it is basically indigestible complex carbo-hydrates
that come from plant foods. What your Grandma called “roughage” is called
fiber by scientists. When you look at some food labels, fiber is often
listed under carbohydrates - but it is not a single food or substance and by
itself has no calories because your body cannot absorb it.

There are actually two types of fiber and they have different health
benefits. The two types are “water soluble” and “water insoluble”. Soluble
fibers include the skins of fruits such as apples, oranges (not the orange
peel, but the white material after you peel it), pears, peaches and grapes;
the skins of vegetables, seeds; oat bran, dried beans, oatmeal, barley, rye,
and prunes. Insoluble fibers include the meat of fruits and vegetables,
dried beans, wheat bran, seeds, popcorn, brown rice, and whole grain
products such as breads, cereals, and pasta.

Bran of course does bulk up the diet and results in larger, softer stools.
But it actually does more than prevent constipation - there are clear data
showing that fiber also reduces the risk of colon cancers. The “stickiest”
kinds of fiber are the gums and pectins (soluble fiber) and they help keep
cholesterol under control by removing bile acids that digest fat. Bile
acids, which promote better digestion, unfortunately also contribute much to
the “reabsorption” from the bowel wall of our bodies own “home-made”
cholesterol. Every gram of fiber intake per day reduces your total blood
cholesterol by approximately one point. The same class of fibers may help
regulate blood sugar as well. This latter feat is accomplished by coating
the bowel’s lining and delaying stomach emptying. As a result, fiber can
slow sugar absorption after a meal and may reduce the amount of insulin
needed to keep blood sugar at the right levels. Reducing the over-production
of insulin is a major factor in reducing obesity.

Insulin “resistance” (abnormally high insulin levels) is common in very
obese patients and may be a factor in “obesity begets obesity”. Fiber is
also a weight watchers dream since fibers called cellulose and
hemicelluloses take up space in the stomach, making us feel full; thus
lowering total caloric intake at meal time. Popular agents such as Metamucil
are actually an important part of many weight reduction diets as they slow
down absorption of sugars taken in as part of most meals - promoting further
weight loss.

The average American gets only 14 grams of fiber per day in their diet. Most
scientists agree that the optimal amount is closer to 35 grams per day.
Increasing the consumption of “complex” carbo-hydrates is the best way to
increase fiber intake. Fiber supplements are also available at the grocery.
However, be aware that a large increase in your fiber intake over a short
period of time may result in bloating, diarrhea, gas and general discomfort.
It is important then to increase the fiber amount in your diet gradually
over a period of time (up to three weeks) to allow your “gut” to acclimated
and avoid abdominal side-effects.

The old cliché that you are what you eat is quite true. Many people suffer from certain health conditions that even though may not be cured, can be controlled through your diet. All foods have certain qualities that affect the body in different ways. Nutrients are broken down and used in different ways, allowing your body to use them how it desires.

Herbs have been forever rumored to help your body reach its full potential, but they are not the only answer. Your grocery list has foods on them that can help whatever ails you, but you’ll want to alter them just a little. Many of the foods we eat are processed, but they are really over processed. Chemical additives are in the foods, but you might not even know it. The Food and Drug Administration’s restrictions on food labeling might be a little more lax than you thought.

Ingredients need to be listed on the nutritional facts label on food packaging, but ingredients that make up the ingredients don’t necessarily get listed. This can create problems if you are trying to avoid certain substances for health reasons.

How Gout was Controlled Through Healthy Foods

My story has taken place over the last twenty two months. I was faced with gout as a twenty five year old, much younger than the average male dealing with it. Gout is a form of arthritis that affects the joints like the big toe, ankles, and knees. My gout affected both of my big toes. Gouty arthritis is a very painful condition; a bed sheet is too heavy to be placed on the toe. The toe swells and it is nearly impossible to walk, let alone wear shoes. It comes on without warning, lasting up to two weeks.

In the initial trip to the doctor’s office, I was diagnosed with gout. All the usual symptoms. I could either wait it out or take a pill everyday to control it. The culprit is purines in foods, and the kidneys’ inability to eliminate uric acid which comes from purines in the digestive process. Purines are found in red meat, bacon, beer, red wine, pastas, and everything else I enjoy on a regular basis. The list is quite long.

I refuse to take a prescription drug for the rest of my life. I don’t even like to take aspirin. How can I change my diet without eliminating my favorite foods?

Diet Experimentation

Working in restaurants my entire life has given me the ability to cook and lots of food knowledge. I took this info to the grocery store. I discovered an excellent organic food store one city over. What organics offer is purity. The foods are not shelf stable for long as long as those in the conventional grocery stores, but I don’t care. I know what is in the food. A red pepper is made from pepper plants grown in organic soil with no preservative chemicals or wax coatings. My grocery bills are a little more expensive, but the health care costs I avoid offset the difference.

Through my experimentation with food, I realized that I really didn’t need to change my diet. My gout is caused from nitrates and other chemicals that are used to preserve red meat, bacon, and other foods. All natural bacon that is not preserved with nitrates does not affect the gout. I used to feel it coming on as I ate the old foods.

Reveal Your Food Aids

The body really does have the ability to heal itself; you just have to let it. Capsaicin, which is found in peppers from the bell variety to jalapeo to chilies, is noted to help soothe inflammation from arthritis. They will work from the inside or the outside in paste form. There are foods that will work to help whatever ails you.

Any lesson to be learned is experimentation. Many of us are too quick to accept the prescription drug in our lives, but there are too many side effects. They are hard on the body and the digestive system, which can create more problems. A simple diet is better.

When you are at the store, just think about what they ate one hundred years ago. Did they eat at fast food restaurants and make dinner out of boxes? Processed foods can last literally years and years before getting old. Doesn’t that sound unreal? Organic foods without chemicals will not last as long, and you’ll have to make more trips to the store or farmer’s market. In my case, I think it is worth the extra effort. If I don’t need a prescription drug to control the gout, I’ll do it.

too. Sprouts are also a great source of vitamins,
fiber, protein, anti-oxidants, and enzymes. A sprout
is produced when a seed starts growing into a
vegetable. Sprouts can grow from the seeds of
vegetables, from grains such as buckwheat, and from
beans. While Mung beans are perhaps the most common
source of sprouts, you can also obtain good results
from lentils, soybeans and chickpeas just to name a
few.

Sprouts can be grown almost anywhere and the best part
is you only need a few basic supplies to get started.
By following a few simple steps, you can receive a
continual supply of nutritious sprouts.

While there are several commercial products available
to cultivate sprouts, here are some of the easiest
methods to help you get started.

- Growing Sprouts in Flower Pots -

1. Start with a clean clay or plastic flower pot. Make
sure there is a hole in the bottom of the pot to ensure
good drainage. Then place a piece of cheesecloth or
muslin in the bottom of the pot over the hole so that
the seeds/beans cannot fall out.

2. Next, soak the seeds or beans overnight and then
put them in the pot. Remove any that are broken or
damaged. Cover the plant pot with a dish.

3. Once a day, hold the pot under running water for a
few minutes. This is to soak the seeds/beans
thoroughly.

4. Once the sprouts begin to show, remove the dish and
cover the pot with a piece of clear plastic wrap to let
in the light. Place the sprouting pot near a window
that allows daylight but is not in direct sunlight.

- Growing the Sprouts in Trays -

1. Soak the seeds or beans overnight. Remove any that
are broken or damaged before you begin the sprouting
process.

2. Select a low, flat dish (like a pie plate) or tray.
You can purchase growing trays wherever planting
supplies are sold.

3. Next, spread out a 2-inch layer of soil and then
sprinkle the soaked seeds or beans on top of the soil.

4. Cover the seeds/beans with four layers of damp
newspaper.

5. Cover the top of the tray with clear plastic wrap.

6. When the sprouts start to lift the plastic cover,
(usually about three days) remove the newspaper.

7. Place the tray in a window so that the light can
turn the sprouts green. You will need a space to place
the sprouting tray that receives daylight but is not in
direct sunlight.

8. Because the thin layer of soil dries out quickly,
water twice each day.

9. After about 8-10 days, you will have sprouts tall
enough to harvest.

- Growing Sprouts in a Jar -

1. Soak the seeds, grains, or beans in lukewarm water
overnight in a wide-mouth glass jar. Remove any that
are broken or damaged before you begin the sprouting
process. (Sprouting increases the seed volume.
4-tablespoons will be sufficient for a quart size
container.)

2. In the morning, pour off the water in the jar and
rinse the seeds/beans thoroughly.

3. Place a piece of cheesecloth or muslin over the
mouth of the jar. Use a rubber band to hold the
material securely in place. This makes rinsing easier.

4. To keep the sprouts constantly damp, repeat the
rinsing 2-3 times a day. Remember to drain any excess
water because the sprouts should not stand in water.

5. Keep the jar away from the light for the first few
days.

6. When the seeds/beans begin to sprout, (usually
about the forth day) move the jar into the light to
activate the chlorophyll and turn the sprouts green.

- Harvesting and Storing the Sprouts -

Newly germinated grain, seed, and sprouts, increase in
food value in the very first period of growth. Grains
should be harvested and eaten from when they are six
days old until they are 4-5 inches tall. To harvest,
just take your kitchen scissors and cut what you need.

Sprouts from beans, peas, etc., are ready earlier and
can be eaten when they are 3-6 days old, depending on
the type of sprout. For spouts grown in no soil or in
seed trays, you can harvest the green “grass” when it
starts to grow. Sprouts, from grain sown in jars, are
ready sooner and are edible even before they turn
green. Seeds sown in soil take a little longer.

If necessary, wash the sprouts thoroughly to remove the
seed coat. Sprouts need to be stored in the
refrigerator once they are ready to eat. Put the
sprouts in tight sealing bags, and they will remain
flavorful and crisp for one to two weeks. Rinsing the
sprouts daily under cold water can extend their life.

Sprouts may be frozen by blanching them over steam for
three minutes and then cooling them in ice water. Drain
them and pack into freezer containers.

By growing your own sprouts, you will save yourself
money because it is less expensive to buy sprout seeds
and grow and harvest the sprouts yourself than it is
to buy the sprouts from a market. Sprouting at home
takes only a few minutes a day, and can produce a good
part of your daily requirements of the nutrients you
need from fresh produce. The hassles are minor, the
costs are low, and the freshness is wonderful.

Better sleep = better metabolism. I have been saying it for years - since my own
experience of being stressed out, overworked and under-slept and not able to lose
weight but just recently this fact is getting a good amount of press.

According to Michael Tri H. Do, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute predoctoral
fellow from Harvard University, “In recent years, a lot of excitement has
accompanied the forging of links between sleep and feeding. For instance, there are
neurons that make a substance called orexin. These cells are located in a region of

giving rats orexin causes them to eat more, while blocking it causes them to eat
very little.”

Yikes! This could be enough to put you to sleep right here! He IS right though so
let’s bring it down to what we can do about it because the basic gist is: if you sleep
better, you breathe better, you move better, you look better, you feel better and
isn’t that what it is all about? YES!

Sleep for Joy - the Nutrition Side

Many of us who have trouble sleeping (whether it be falling asleep or staying asleep)
turn to prescription drugs such as Ambien, Sonata, Valium, Xanax, and Restoril, or
one of the many over-the-counter options such as Benadryl. Taking this route can
be habit forming and this actually then inhibits the body from being able to
establish its own sleep rhythm, according to Michael Sateia, M.D. and president of
the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Unless you are suffering from a severe sleep disorder (anyone taking any form of
major medication should be consulting with a medical physician) taking a more
natural way can be a smarter and safer long-term option for your best health:

1) Tryptophan - a naturally occurring amino acid that makes you sleepy. A
tryptophan rich snack an hour before bed can promote sleep.

Try these:

• 2 slices of lean turkey
• a small slice of cheese
• pure (no sugar) yogurt
• a handful of sunflower seeds (high in Vitamin B that enhances the body’s
conversion of tryptophan).

2) Magnesium - a natural sedative. This powerful mineral can be found
in:

• wheat bran
• brewer’s yeast
• seaweed products
• almonds
• cashews

3) Chamomile - best taken through sipping a nice cup of chamomile tea
an hour before bed. This will calm your digestive track and reduce muscle tightness.
For a real knocker-outer add a few drops of a lavender tincture and a 1/2 a
teaspoon of honey.

Sleep for Joy - the Lifestyle Side

The way you use your bedroom can have a profound effect on your ability to get a
good night’s sleep.

1. Recover your bed - If you use your bed (or even your bedroom for
some people) for anything other than sleep you may be setting up a psychological
barrier to a good night’s sleep. Get into bed only when you are really tired. Use
another room or chair for reading and especially for watching television. If you live
in a studio apartment or dorm room, try to separate your bed from other areas with
a desk, curtain or screen.

2. Be dark - the brain associates daylight with being alert and active.
Believe it or not, even the glow from a neon clock can translate into daylight for the
mind (plus, is it really helpful to wake-up, see the time, calculate how much longer
you have to sleep and then worry about it?). Cover your clock, close your curtains
and wear a sleep mask if you need to.

3. Fresh air - no matter the season, fresh air is a necessity for a good
nights sleep. A stuffy room can remind you of your day or keep your head from
clearing. Open the window a crack for the night or wide for a minute before you go
to sleep to clear the air.

Are there any benefits to be obtained from drinking water that has Fluoride added? Well, the jury seems to be out, and they have been out for a very long time, without producing a satisfactory answer as to whether it is beneficial or harmful.

Scientists have discovered that there is a Toxic interaction between Fluoride and Aluminium, which can lead to Alzheimer’s Disease.
Others say that Fluoridation is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects over the long term.

A large number of local authorities, worldwide have included Fluoride in the Cocktail that is called drinking water, for many years, whilst others have steered clear of inflicting this on the public, without their consent. Some authorities feel, that if parents want their children to have Fluoride, they can obtain tablets themselves, some authorities even provide them free, if they are required, as cost is not usually a problem, Fluoride is not an expensive chemical.

It is very difficult not to use Fluoride, as most brands of toothpaste contain this chemical, though if you read the labeling on products, you will find that there are a few around, that are free of Fluoride, perhaps this is what you should be looking out for if you put any value on your health, of course the choice is yours.

Fluoride is supposed to help prevent teeth problems in growing children, it appears from a number of reports that it makes very little difference to the state of childrens teeth, large numbers of Dentists are very much in favour of fluoride in the water.

Fluoride is, Hexafluorosilicic acid, a toxic industrial waste by-product, derived from Super-Phosphate, a fertiliser and Aluminium manufacturing.
It is a fact that Sodium silicofluoride (Fluoride) has never been registered anywhere in the world as “safe” for human beings.
It has been accepted scientifically and by some health and medical authorities that “Fluoridated drinking water, must not be used in the preparation of “Baby formula nutrition” because of the dangerously high potential, of children receiving a poisonous overdose.

International scientific studies have shown that there is very little difference, if any, between the incidence of decayed, missing or filled teeth in children, or adults living in Fluoridated, or non-Fluoridated areas.

Medical professionals and scientists are warning that water fluoridation has dangerous long term health consequences, yet we are still allowing authorities to force it upon our children.
